The last few weeks I haven’t felt like myself.
I’ve been tired.
My body has been aching all over.
I haven’t felt like eating.
I haven’t felt like cooking.
At one point I even wondered if I was coming down with the flu, which is very unusual for me.
Then I started thinking that perhaps my thyroid was playing up again.
After all, I’m only human.
Even though I reversed my hypothyroidism years ago through diet and lifestyle, when you don’t feel yourself your mind naturally starts asking questions.
So last Tuesday I went for a full blood test.
Everything came back perfect.
Including my thyroid.
It’s amazing really.
Food really is powerful.
Then I was talking about how I was feeling with a friend of mine who is a surgeon, and he reminded me that I’d been in an accident on 11 June.
I’d completely forgotten.
His words were, and I quote,
“The shock and inflammation are stressful and any brain injury heals with sleep.”
And suddenly it all made sense.
I suffered a head injury with concussion.
I was badly bruised.
My body wasn’t trying to tell me my thyroid was playing up.
My body was asking me to rest.
That’s exactly what I’ve wanted to do for the last few weeks.
Sleep.
Like everybody else, I was looking for an answer.
I even had a blood test.
But the answer was there all along.
My body knew exactly what it needed.
Rest.
This experience has reminded me of something we often forget.
Food is powerful.
Movement is powerful.
But rest is just as important.
Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is stop feeling guilty, listen to our body and give it what it needs.
That’s the longevity lesson for today.
Listen to your body.
It’s usually right.
Have you ever ignored what your body was trying to tell you?
Prevention rather than cure.
