This morning, a new trial made headlines: a slimming pill, made with the same active ingredients as an existing weekly weight-loss injection, is being hailed as a game-changer for weight management. The main difference? Instead of a once-a-week injection, this version must be taken daily.
The trial lasted just 18 months. That raises an important question — is this really long enough to fully understand the long-term effects, risks, and sustainability of the results? Weight loss and metabolic health are lifelong concerns, not short-term experiments.
My view is that while medication can be useful for certain individuals, it’s not a magic fix. Lasting weight loss and improved health come from balanced eating, regular physical activity, and sustainable lifestyle changes. These not only help manage weight but also improve heart health, mental wellbeing, and energy levels — without the potential side effects or dependency risks that come with medication.
A pill may be tempting because it promises fast results. But without addressing the root causes of weight gain — like diet quality, physical inactivity, stress, and poor sleep — the results are unlikely to last.
Before reaching for a prescription, it’s worth asking: could I achieve the same — or better — results by changing my daily habits? For most of us, the answer is yes.
To your health.
