Nutrition and Hydration Week: Why Food and Drink Matter More Than We Think

Dear reader,

From 16–22 March, we recognise Nutrition and Hydration Week, an annual initiative that has taken place every March since 2012. Its purpose is to bring people together to raise awareness and highlight the vital role that food and drink play in maintaining health and wellbeing, particularly within health and social care settings.

While nutrition and hydration are essential for everyone, they are sometimes overlooked in busy environments or during times of illness. Yet something as simple as eating well and staying properly hydrated can have a powerful impact on how our bodies function and how we feel each day.

Why Nutrition Matters

The food we eat provides the body with the nutrients it needs to function, repair and protect itself. A balanced diet helps support:

  • Energy levels throughout the day
  • A strong immune system
  • Healthy muscles and bones
  • Stable blood sugar levels
  • Overall long-term wellbeing

Many of the world’s longest-living communities naturally follow simple dietary patterns that prioritise whole, minimally processed foods such as vegetables, legumes, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds.

The Importance of Hydration

Water is essential for almost every process in the body. Staying properly hydrated helps:

  • Regulate body temperature
  • Support digestion and nutrient absorption
  • Maintain healthy circulation
  • Help organs, including the kidneys, function efficiently

Even mild dehydration can affect concentration, energy levels and mood.

A good rule of thumb is to drink regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until you feel very thirsty. Water, herbal teas and water-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables can all contribute to daily hydration.

Small Daily Habits That Make a Difference

Nutrition and Hydration Week reminds us that healthy habits do not need to be complicated. A few simple actions can support overall health:

✔ Start the day with a balanced breakfast
✔ Include a variety of colourful vegetables in your meals
✔ Choose whole foods rather than ultra-processed products
✔ Drink water regularly throughout the day
✔ Take time to sit down and enjoy your meals mindfully

When we nourish our bodies well and maintain good hydration, we give ourselves the best possible foundation for energy, resilience and long-term health.
