Can I ask you a question? How many times have you said… “I’ll start on Monday.” “I’ll start after my holiday.” “I’ll start next month.” “I’ll start when life calms down.” One of my favourites is the New Year’s resolution that lasts until the end of January. The truth is, there is never a perfect time to start. If we look at the people living in the Blue Zones, they don’t wait for Monday. They don’t wait for the perfect moment. They don’t go on diets. They simply repeat healthy habits every day because that’s how they live. It’s not something they think about. It’s just their way of life. As a nutritionist, I think I’ve heard just about every excuse there is. “I’m too busy.” “I’ve got too much on.” “I’ll start after the children go back to school.” “I’ll start after Christmas.” “I’ll start when things settle down.” But life doesn’t really settle down, does it? There is always something. Another birthday. Another holiday. Another busy week. Another excuse. If you keep waiting for the perfect time, you could be waiting forever. People often ask me where they should start. My answer is always the same. Just start. It doesn’t have to be a complete change overnight. Have one healthier meal. Go for one walk. Drink another glass of water. Go to bed a little earlier. Choose one thing. Then do it again tomorrow. And the next day. That’s how habits are built. And that’s how longevity is built too.
The longevity lesson today is this.
Longevity isn’t about starting perfectly. It’s about starting. So let me leave you with one question.
What is one small thing you could do today that your future self will thank you for?
Prevention rather than cure.
