You Can’t See Yourself Ageing

One of the biggest problems with ageing is that it happens so slowly.

You don’t wake up one morning and suddenly have high blood pressure.

You don’t suddenly develop type 2 diabetes.

You don’t suddenly lose muscle.

You don’t suddenly develop heart disease.

It happens little by little, day after day, year after year.

That is why so many people say, “I’m fine.”

Until one day, they’re not.

As someone born and raised in Sardinia, one of the world’s original Blue Zones, I grew up seeing ageing very differently.

People didn’t wait until they became ill before looking after themselves.

Looking after themselves was simply part of everyday life.

Meals were cooked from scratch.

Beans and vegetables appeared on the table almost every day.

Walking wasn’t exercise. It was how people got around.

Neighbours looked after one another.

Life was active, simple and connected.

Nobody was trying to become a centenarian.

They were simply creating the conditions that allowed healthy ageing to happen naturally.

Today, we often do the opposite.

We wait.

We wait until we’ve gained weight.

We wait until our blood pressure is high.

We wait until we’re told we’re pre-diabetic.

We wait until we’re constantly tired.

We wait until something hurts.

Then we ask how to fix it.

Longevity doesn’t work like that.

Longevity is built long before the diagnosis.

Every healthy meal is an investment in your future.

Every walk strengthens your heart, muscles and brain.

Every good night’s sleep allows your body to repair itself.

Every time you choose real food over ultra-processed food, you’re making a decision your future self will thank you for.

People often ask me what the secret to longevity is.

I don’t believe there is one.

I believe it’s the thousands of small choices we make over a lifetime.

That’s the lesson I learned growing up in Sardinia.

The people who lived the longest weren’t chasing longevity.

They were simply living in a way that allowed it to happen.

So don’t wait until your body asks for help.

Start looking after it while it’s still quietly looking after you.

Your future health is being built today, whether you realise it or not.

Which future are you building?

Prevention rather than cure.
